Below you will find the team and territory assignment(s) for the Colima Warbler Census to be held in Big Bend National Park on May 13 - 15, 2022.
| Gonna get some swag... |
First, some important things to note:
- If you haven’t met any or some of your team members before, please reach out to them as everyone is on the distribution list for the email you received that included the link to this page.
- You will need to agree on when/where to meet your team to either start day hiking (on Saturday) or backpacking (on Friday) to your territory. Note that backpackers should be at their campsite by Friday night to start surveying Saturday morning.
- For those of you who are backpacking, you will need to make your backcountry campsite reservations as soon as they become available! The reservation system is set to allow reservations no sooner than 6 months (to the day) from your desired date(s). Please let us know which campsite you reserve so we can keep track of everyone. Check the territory maps if you are unsure of which campsites are close to or within your assigned area(s).
- Day hikers should already have reserved their room at the Lodge. If you are a day hiker who plans to camp at the Basin Campground, the booking window is the same as for the backcountry campsites (6 months ahead of time, to the day), so book as soon as you can!
- If your team has been assigned more than one territory, it is up to you how to cover them over the course of the two survey days. We’d be happy to discuss them with you beforehand. If your team decides to split up to cover a territory, please make sure that no one surveys alone.
- We plan to hand out packets with territory maps, data sheets, NPS permit copies, and Colima hats on the patio behind the Chisos Mountain Lodge from Noon - 5pm on Friday, May 13th. If you can’t meet us then, please let us know ahead of time and we can arrange for a handoff in Austin (if you are local) before we leave for the park on May 9th.
- Census goes on rain or shine, unless Covid-19 or another force majeure shuts us down (again!).
- Team dinner (or possibly a happy hour) on Sunday night is still up in the air at this point in time. If it does occur it will probably start around 5pm at the Lodge restaurant. Stay tuned.
Please let us know ASAP if you have any questions or if your plans have changed. We will be communicating with you closer to the census time, but we welcome questions anytime.
Once again, we greatly appreciate your willingness to participate!
